Elon University will be represented by professors and students at the South By Southwest Conference March 11-20, in Austin, Texas. Thirteen Elon representatives will be attending the conference to hold sessions and participate in events.

SXSW is a popular media and music conference. Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, SXSW features speakers including futurist Bruce Sterling, researcher danah boyd and technology experts Jonathan Zittrain and Susan Crawford.  SXSW Film will host the debut of the documentary on the Foo Fighters, by Oscar Award winning director, James Moll. SXSW Music features more than 2000 performers playing in venues around Austin.

Janna Anderson, associate professor in the School of Communications at Elon and director of the Imagining the Internet Center will be leading a SXSW Interactive Conference Core Conversation session. The session is title “Internet Evolution: Hyperconnected, Hyperreal,” and will be an audience participation session with star discussion leaders, including Paul Jones, Mike Nelson and Chris O’Brien.

Derek Lackaff, also Elon faculty, will be part of a panel session called “Rebooting Iceland: Crowdsourcing Innovation in Uncertain Times.” The session is organized by Dilja Amundadottir, producer for CCP Games. Lackaff is on faculty for the Interactive Media Master’s program at Elon. Students from the iMedia program along with iMedia program assistant Maggie Mullikin and Brad Berkner, projects coordinator, will also be in attendance. They will participate in events and promote the iMedia program.

For those who can’t be at the conference, there are “NotAtSXSW” events that are coordinated through Twitter and other online tools. In 2009, these events were held in London, New York, Wisconsin, Portland and Miami.
